![]() ![]() Figuring out how to draw what’s in my head to communicate an idea. But I also know that in order to really qualify as someone good at drawing I need to be able to not just follow along with an artist to make the character look recognizable but start creating poses and situations with the characters that are unique and original. It’s fun to draw like this, there’s something about drawing these characters that just brings joy. Sometimes it went a little too quickly in time and I had to pause the video to keep up with the master artist… If I could be a critic I would have given a bit more time to focus on the drawing aspect. ![]() I love the way each episode shared something about their life and their choice of character. It shows you how characters are drawn to life and I also loved hearing the story and path each Story Artist or Animator took on their path to Disney. Disney Sketchbook is one of those wonderful things that have popped up as original content on the platform. You can watch behind the scenes and the making of films, or you can simply watch the sunsets at Walt Disney World’s iconic parks or an imaginative flyover above the worlds of Star Wars… I love what they’re doing. Peaceful, artful and lovely works of media. They use imagination to move reality and humanity forward. I’ve always believed and held high respect for the storytellers of Disney. And that skill brings great power and responsibility to push others in the right direction. We can share stories and narratives that shape and guide our culture. It’s another way (or language) we humans can share ideas and visions in our heads. This still might seem crazy to some people, but the unique quality and the fact that there are only 2500 copies in the whole world make this book so special that I don’t regret a single penny.Drawing is learning to communicate visually. I “only” paid 150 € for mine (the same in $). It took me a few years to get a really good bargain. Since it is so rare, you shouldn’t be shocked that prices are excessively high – we are talking about at least 500 € (the same in $). Sure, you can always find one online on Amazon, Ebay ( normally is your best chance) or other similar sites, but to get it at a reasonable price… well, that is another story. The fact that it was published already 20 years ago doesn’t make it any better. Like I said, this book is a limited edition and therefore very rare and unfortunately very (very) expensive. Title: The Little Mermaid – The Sketchbook Series It is likely that they Disney is going to publish a book on Ariel at some point in the future – but until then, I’m afraid that all we have is this amazing sketchbook, which makes it an absolute must-have. Which is by the way strange (Hello, Disney Editions?!). Another reason why this book means so much to me is the fact that there is actually no such thing as a proper “ The Art of The Little Mermaid” book. It is one of my favorite Disney movies and Ariel is one of my most beloved animated characters of all time. The Little Mermaid is without doubt one of my favorites of the whole Sketchbook Series. The color of the cover of the book that is inside varies according to the Sketchbook: The Little Mermaid comes in a dashing blue for example. They are also protected by a beautiful and solid slipcase. There are only 2500 copies of each book out there – the books even come with a numbered certificate of authenticity (btw: mine is number 2435). So, what exactly makes these books so special? Well, it is a limited edition, so they are extremely rare and expensive. And as you might already know by now: I love (nearly) all of them! Still, The Sketchbook Series earns a special place in my library. As you also might know, I do have a looot of Disney books – dealing with different aspects (animation, parks, imagineering, artists, concept art, design, storybooks….). Like the title reveals, there are a few of them: The Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, Bambi, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, Snow White and Toy Story. If you follow me on Instagram, you already know that I am totally in love with the magnificent Walt Disney Sketchbook Series – a special series of books dedicated to the art of Disney’s pencil sketches. I just don’t see how a world that makes such wonderful things could be bad? ![]()
